W: OK, Matthew, it’s time for bed. Remember you need to get up at six o’clock tomorrow morning.
M: But it’s just nine o’clock now. I’ll go to bed in half an hour.
M: Excuse me, are you Mary Green?
W: No, I’m Jenny Green. Mary is my twin sister. She’s travelling in China now.
W: Everybody is here except your brother. Shall we start the party?
M: If we wait for him, we won’t start the party till an hour later. He has just left his apartment. Time is precious.
M: It’s already 10:00 pm. Why is your neighbor still playing the piano?
W: He often does that. Though I’ve talked with him for many times, he never listens to me. I hate it, but I don’t know what to do now.
W: Oh, we left our city map at the hotel. I’m totally lost now. What should we do? We don’t speak Italian. We cannot ask anyone for directions here.
M: Don’t worry. We can buy a city map immediately.
W: When did you have your hair cut last time, Ted?
M: Let me think. Oh, I had my hair cut last time on July 10.
W: It’s already August 25 now. I think your hair is a bit too long. Why not have it cut again?
M: I guess you’re right. Where can I find a barber shop here?
W: There is one on the left of the hotel. I often have my hair cut there. You can go there.
M: OK. I’ll go there tonight.
W: What about watching a movie this afternoon?
M: I’d like to, but I already have my plan. I’ll go to the gym to do some running.
W: Why not just do some running outside? In this way, you can save a lot of time and we can go to a movie after that.
M: It’s so hot. I’m afraid I’ll pass out if I run outside in such weather.
W: Oh, right. The weather is really bad these days. I don’t want to stay at home alone. I’ll go to the gym, too. We can share a taxi.
M: When will you start going to the gym?
W: Today, I guess. I want to lose some weight.
M: Yeah, you really should lose some weight. You are always staying at home and watching TV.
W: I’ve decided to live a healthier life.
M: Good. Then let’s go.
M: I called you this afternoon. But your father said you were not at home.
W: Yes. I went to the zoo with my cousin Lily.
M: What did you see there?
W: Many animals. First we saw a panda and its cute babies. The two panda babies look so cute. I just didn’t want to leave.
M: Did you feed the pandas?
W: No. We were not allowed to do that. They just eat what they are provided by zookeepers.
M: What did you see next?
W: Next we saw a lion. It was a bit scary, so we didn’t dare to get close to it.
M: Well, which animals are the most interesting at the zoo?
W: The peacocks. I think the peacocks really love being flattered. As long as you say they are beautiful, they will flip their tails up in a fan. But I must admit they really look beautiful.
M: Hello, Juliet, long time no see!
W: Yes. I went to Beijing for a business trip. I stayed there for about a month and came back yesterday.
M: You must feel tired now after such a long trip.
W: No. I slept almost all the way on the plane. So I feel refreshed now.
M: Good. Beijing is full of places of interest. Did you visit any of them?
W: Sure. But not at first. I had to stay inside all day long because it was very cold. But then the temperature rose and the weather turned great. So I spent some time travelling around the city.
M: Did you go to the Summer Palace?
W: Yes. But I went to the Forbidden City first. It is really amazing. It is so large that I walked in it the whole day.
M: Did you visit the Great Wall there?
W: No. It was a bit far and I missed it. But I’ll visit it next time I go there.
M: How I wish I’d go to Beijing one day, too!
M: Hello, everyone. I’m Tim Brown. I’m in charge of our school newspaper. An editor for its English edition has left our school because her family has moved to another city. So now we need a new editor for its English edition. After you get hired, you mainly need to do two things. One is to read English newspapers in our library and choose the good articles. You can also choose good English articles from websites. Just make sure the articles are the latest ones. We also choose good English articles written by students in our school and edit them for use.
You’ll have to meet the following requirements. First, you should be in Grade 1 or Grade 2. Second, you should be good at written English. Third, you should type fast.
If you’re interested, please come to me or fill in a form. I’ll arrange an interview for you on October 15, the day after tomorrow.
