W: Where are we going to have the physical education class?
M: In the gymnasium.
W: What are we going to do this class?
M: Play basketball.
W: May I stay in the classroom? I’ve got a really bad stomachache.
M: No. You should observe the class in the gym.
M: Here you go.
W: No way! I’ll drink with my own glass.
M: Koreans exchange glasses when drinking.
W: I’m sorry, but I’d rather not.
M: My glass isn’t so dirty.
W: Don’t get me wrong. Americans are taught not to drink from someone else’s glass.
W: Where are you going on your honeymoon?
M: We can’t decide between Australia and New Zealand. I want to go to India. But my wife lived there as a child, so she wants to go somewhere new.
M: How are you getting on with your cleaning? Do you need my help?
W: That’s very kind of you, but I think I’ll finish it soon.
W: Good afternoon, sir. What can I do for you?
M: My friends are coming for dinner this evening. I want to book three tables for four, please.
W: Good evening. Where to, sir?
M: Will you take me to the Capital Hotel?
W: All right, sir.
M: How long do you think it will take?
W: I guess we’ll be there in 20 minutes or so.
M: How much do I owe you?
W: That’ll be seven dollars, sir.
M: OK. Here you are. Keep the change, please.
W: Thank you, sir.
M: Hi, Katherine.
W: Hi, Kevin. I am glad to see you. Can you help me with my new computer?
M: When did you buy your new computer?
W: I bought it yesterday afternoon and they delivered it this morning at 10: 45.
M: So what’s the problem?
W: I am not sure. It just can’t connect to the Net.
M: Can I have a look? Oh, this is the new Dell notebook. How much is it?
W: It is only 345 pounds.
M: Very nice. I am sure we will sort out your Internet in no time. I am on my way to the doctor now, but I should be back in about 45 minutes. Can I come back at around 3: 15 pm?
W: That will be perfect.
W: Hello, sir. What can I do for you?
M: I bought this CD player here four months ago. But it doesn’t work now, so I’d like you to fix it or return my money.
W: May I see your sales slip, please?
M: Yeah, here it is.
W: I’m sorry, sir. The after-sales service ended thirty days ago.
M: What difference does thirty days make? The quality of the machine was obviously not very good when I bought it.
W: Well, the workers in our service center can check it and have it repaired, but there’ll be a charge.
M: A charge? Now look. I didn’t drop it off a building or step on it. I mean, you can...
W: Sir, I’m sorry. If we make an exception for you, then we’ll have to make one for everybody.
W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?
M: Yes, I’d like to see the manager. Here’s my card.
W: Thank you, Mr. Wang. Do you have an appointment?
M: No, I’m afraid I don’t. Is it possible for me to see him now?
W: I’m afraid Mr. Li is engaged at the moment. Would you mind waiting?
M: Well, how long will it be?
W: About half an hour.
M: That’s too bad. I can’t wait that long. I have another appointment at ten.
W: Can the assistant manager meet you instead?
M: No, I discussed the details about the sales of our new equipment with the manager on the telephone yesterday.
W: Do you want to make another appointment?
M: Yes, I suppose that’s the best thing I can do for now. I’ll be here on Thursday morning at 10 o’clock. Is that all right?
W: Yes, I’ll make a note of that and ask Mr. Li to confirm that.
W: A new report from the WHO says processed meat causes cancer. Processed meat includes bacon, hot dogs, ham, sausages, canned meat and meat-based sauces. The report was made by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It says the world should know about the danger of processed meat because many people eat it and get cancer. The report says that eating 50 grams of processed meat a day can increase the chance of developing cancer by 18 per cent. Fifty grams is just two slices of bacon or one sausage. The WHO also says eating red meat carries a risk.
The WHO warned people about eating too much processed and red meat, but also said meat had health benefits. It has many important vitamins and minerals. The WHO said people should eat less processed meat and more food that contains more fibre, such as fruit and vegetables. People need a balanced diet. The meat industry is not happy with the report. It does not like the fact that processed meat is in the same group as tobacco and alcohol. Processed meat is not as harmful as alcohol or tobacco. The North American Meat Institute said the report would scare people.
